What Is a PDO Thread Lift?
A PDO thread lift places tiny dissolvable sutures beneath the skin to physically lift and reposition loose tissue. The threads are made from polydioxanone, the same material used in surgical sutures for decades, so your body already knows how to absorb it safely. Once placed, tiny barbs along each thread grip the tissue and hold it in its new position, which is why you can see a difference immediately after the procedure.
What keeps the results going is what happens next. As the threads dissolve, your body responds by producing new collagen in that area. The threads are gone by around six months. The collagen stays, and that is what carries your result through 12 to 18 months.

What a PDO Thread Lift Can Treat
Brow and upper face
A brow lift with threads reduces hooding and opens up the eye area without surgery. This is one of the more requested thread applications because the change is noticeable while staying subtle, and there is no good injectable equivalent for it. Smooth threads can also be used across the forehead or under the eyes for fine lines, in zones too delicate for barbed threads.
Mid-face and cheeks
When cheek tissue descends, it deepens the smile lines below it. Threads lift that tissue back toward where it used to sit, which softens nasolabial folds as a result rather than filling them in.
Jowls and jawline
Jowling and a softening jaw edge are the two concerns that bring most patients in. Threads redefine the jaw line and reduce heaviness in the lower face, and this is where a thread lift tends to produce its most visible change.

Smooth threads
Smooth threads have no barbs and are not used for lifting. Their job is collagen stimulation in areas where texture, fine lines, and skin quality are the concern rather than position. Under-eye hollowing, forehead texture, and skin under the chin are common uses. They are often placed alongside lifting threads so the surface improves while the deeper threads handle structure.
What to Expect
A PDO thread lift takes under an hour from start to finish.
Consultation and mapping
Your provider evaluates your skin, identifies where the laxity actually is, and maps thread placement around your specific anatomy. This step determines your result more than anything else that happens.
Numbing
A local anesthetic is applied before any threads are placed, so discomfort during the procedure stays minimal.
Thread placement
A thin hollow cannula creates access through a tiny entry point. There is no cutting and no stitches. Threads are guided into place through that access point.
Lifting and securing
Your provider adjusts the threads to engage the barbs with the tissue and set the lift. The cannula comes out and the entry point closes on its own.
Recovery
Mild swelling, bruising, and tenderness are expected and usually resolve within a week. Most patients are comfortable running errands or working from home within a few days. You may be asked to avoid strenuous exercise, dental work, and sleeping on your side briefly while things settle.
Results
You see a lift immediately. It improves further over the next two to three months as collagen builds behind the initial result. Most patients look their best around the one month mark, and results generally hold for 12 to 18 months depending on the area treated, your skin, and your lifestyle.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients see meaningful improvement from a single session. When several areas are being treated, one to three sessions spaced a few weeks apart is common.
Repeat treatments are safe long term with no lifetime limit. Most patients wait about 12 months between sessions so previous threads dissolve fully before new ones go in, and many build thread treatment into a longer term plan since each round adds more collagen.
Am I a Candidate for a PDO Thread Lift?
Thread lifts work best for patients with mild to moderate sagging who want a visible lift without surgery. The ideal candidate has skin that has started to descend but still has reasonable elasticity, because the threads need something to hold onto.
You may be a good candidate if you:
- Notice jowling or a softening jawline
- Have a brow that sits lower than it used to
- See cheek descent that is deepening your smile lines
- Have mild to moderate neck laxity
- Want a visible lift without a facelift or downtime measured in weeks
- Are in good general health
When a thread lift is not the right choice
If your laxity is advanced or your skin has lost significant elasticity, threads may not hold well and a surgical lift would likely give you a better and longer lasting result. If your main issue is volume loss rather than descent, filler or a collagen stimulator like Sculptra may be the better answer. If it is skin quality rather than position, RF microneedling or QuantumRF makes more sense.
Thread lifts are also not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with certain autoimmune conditions, or with active infection in the treatment area.
