What Are PRP and PRF?
PRP and PRF are not topical products and they are not foreign substances. They are concentrated extracts of your own blood, used to activate the same repair processes your skin already relies on.
Both start the same way. A small amount of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge, separating out a concentrated solution of platelets and growth factors far more potent than what normally circulates. Whether that becomes PRP or PRF depends on the processing, and that difference affects how the growth factors are released.
PRP, platelet-rich plasma
The more established of the two, with the longest clinical track record in facial rejuvenation. Results develop over four to six weeks and keep improving for up to six months.
PRF, platelet-rich fibrin
Processed without anticoagulants, which keeps the platelets active longer and releases growth factors gradually rather than all at once. PRF also contains fibrin, a structural protein that scaffolds new tissue growth. That makes it useful for deeper repair and it is what allows PRF to be made into Bio-Gel.
Your provider will recommend which one fits your concern. Many patients end up using both for different purposes.
Three Ways We Use PRP and PRF
Microneedling with PRP or PRF
The most common approach for skin quality. Microneedling creates controlled micro-channels, and the PRP or PRF is applied so it absorbs through them, delivering growth factors into the skin where they amplify the collagen response.
This is what most people mean when they talk about a vampire facial. It is the right choice for texture, tone, fine lines, pore size, and mild laxity.

Injections with PRP or PRF
Rather than being applied to the surface, the concentrate is injected directly into specific areas where deeper rebuilding is needed. Used around the eyes, in the cheeks, and in the temples to stimulate collagen and improve tissue quality from within.

PRF Bio-Gel, natural filler
This is the one most patients have never heard of, and it is worth knowing about.
Your PRF is heated and cooled until it becomes a smooth, gel-like consistency, thick enough to be injected as a filler. It restores volume immediately, the way a traditional filler does, while the platelets and growth factors continue stimulating collagen, elastin, and tissue repair over the following months.
The difference is that it contains no synthetic material at all. For patients who want volume restored but do not want hyaluronic acid or a collagen stimulator, Bio-Gel is the closest thing to a genuinely natural filler.
It is used for under-eye hollows and dark circles, cheek volume loss, smile lines, marionette lines, temples, jawline contour, and overall facial rejuvenation. Because it is entirely your own tissue, it is often chosen for delicate areas like under the eyes.
Typical plan: many patients get their result from one treatment, with some benefiting from a series of two to three. Maintenance is usually every 6 to 12 months.

What to Expect
Blood draw
One to four vials are drawn at the start of your appointment depending on what is being treated.
Processing
Your blood is spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelets and growth factors. For Bio-Gel, the PRF is then heated and cooled to create the gel consistency.
Skin preparation
Your skin is cleansed and topical anesthetic is applied. Numbing takes 45 to 60 minutes and is built into your appointment time.
Treatment
Microneedling or injection takes 30 to 45 minutes. A full Bio-Gel appointment including the draw and processing runs about 45 to 60 minutes.
Recovery
Mild redness and swelling typically resolve within 24 to 48 hours for microneedling. Bio-Gel and injections may cause mild swelling or bruising that settles over several days.
Results
Visible change develops over four to six weeks, with collagen remodeling continuing for up to six months. Bio-Gel is different, since you see volume immediately and then continued improvement over two to three months as new collagen forms.
Am I a Candidate?
PRP and PRF suit patients who want improvement from their own biology rather than a synthetic product, and who are comfortable with results that build over time.

When PRP and PRF are not appropriate
These treatments are not suitable if you have an active blood clotting condition, require ongoing blood thinners, or are pregnant or breastfeeding. Certain blood disorders and some medications also rule it out.
It is also worth being straightforward about scope. PRP and PRF improve tissue quality and can restore moderate volume, but they do not provide the structural lift of a firm filler or the tightening of an energy-based treatment. If you need significant projection in the jawline or chin, or you have real skin laxity, your provider will point you toward the treatment that actually does that job.

Is PRP or PRF better?
It depends on your goal. PRP is more established and appropriate for most patients addressing fine lines, texture, or mild laxity. PRF releases growth factors more slowly and contains fibrin, which suits deeper regeneration, and PRF is what Bio-Gel is made from. Your provider will recommend based on what you are treating.
What is PRF Bio-Gel?
Your own PRF processed into a thick gel that can be injected as a filler. It restores volume immediately while the growth factors continue stimulating collagen for months afterward. It contains no synthetic material, which is why patients who want a natural alternative to traditional filler choose it.
Is Bio-Gel as good as regular filler?
It depends what you need. Bio-Gel restores moderate volume and improves skin quality at the same time, and it is entirely natural, which matters to a lot of patients. Traditional filler provides more structure and lasts longer per treatment. Bio-Gel generally requires maintenance every 6 to 12 months, whereas some fillers hold longer. Your provider will be straight with you about the tradeoff.
How is this different from standard microneedling?
Standard microneedling creates controlled micro-injuries to prompt healing. Adding PRP or PRF delivers concentrated growth factors into those channels, which amplifies the collagen response and shortens recovery. Redness that might last five to seven days after conventional microneedling usually resolves within 24 to 48 hours when PRP or PRF is added.
Is this the vampire facial?
Yes, that is the same treatment. The name caught on because the process involves a blood draw and the plasma looks red. What it actually describes is PRP microneedling, a regenerative procedure with years of clinical use behind it.
How many sessions will I need?
Most patients notice better firmness and radiance within one to two weeks of the first session. Visible change in texture, tone, and fine lines usually shows after two to three sessions, with full results from an initial series of three to four appearing around three to six months. Bio-Gel often works in a single treatment.
How long do results last?
A completed series typically holds six to twelve months, and many patients maintain their result for a year or longer. Because the improvement comes from your own collagen, it fades gradually rather than suddenly. Bio-Gel volume generally lasts 6 to 12 months.
Can this be combined with other treatments?
Yes, and it often works better that way. PRP and PRF pair well with neurotoxin, filler, microneedling, lasers, and medical grade skincare. Sequencing matters, so your provider will plan timing rather than recommending everything at once.
