Shaving never stops. Waxing hurts and you have to grow the hair out first. Both of them come with ingrown hairs, razor burn, and the constant low-grade annoyance of maintaining something that keeps coming back.
Laser treatment works differently because it targets the follicle rather than the hair. After a full series, most patients are dealing with far less hair, growing back finer and slower, and a maintenance appointment once or twice a year instead of a razor every few days.
How Does Laser Hair Reduction Work?
Laser treatment sends a concentrated beam of light into the hair follicle, where the pigment absorbs that energy and converts it to heat. The heat damages the follicle at its root, disabling its ability to produce new hair. That is the difference between cutting hair at the surface and disrupting the structure that makes it.
Why we say reduction rather than removal
You will see this treatment advertised as laser hair removal almost everywhere, and that is the term most people search for. We use reduction because it is the more accurate description of what happens.
A completed series disables most of the follicles it treats, and the reduction is long lasting. But hair grows in cycles, and only follicles in an active growth phase respond to treatment, which is why a series is required in the first place. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, and aging can also activate follicles that were dormant. Most patients need occasional maintenance sessions to hold their result, and how often varies from person to person.
We would rather tell you that upfront than have you wonder later why a few hairs came back.
Treatment Areas
Different areas need different settings, timelines, and expectations. The technology is the same throughout, but how it is applied changes by zone.
Face: upper lip, chin, jawline, sideburns
Facial treatment needs precision, and the smaller the area, the shorter the session. These zones take minutes, with settings reduced to protect more delicate facial skin. Because facial hair often cycles faster than body hair, these areas are typically treated every four weeks rather than six.
Underarms and bikini line
Two of the most popular areas to treat, partly because they are where shaving and waxing cause the most irritation. These zones are compact, so sessions are quick, and the relief from razor burn and ingrown hairs tends to show up early in the series.
Large areas: legs, arms, back, chest
This is where laser treatment saves the most time. These areas hold the most follicles and respond strongly when hair is coarse and dark. Sessions take longer, and these zones are generally treated every six weeks to match the slower body hair cycle.
Brazilian and intimate areas
For many patients this is the area where ending the shaving and waxing cycle matters most. Comfort and discretion are the priority, and treatment is always performed by a licensed medical provider with settings adjusted for sensitive skin.
What to Expect
Before your appointment
Shave the area a day or two beforehand so the laser can reach the follicle cleanly. Avoid sun exposure and self-tanner in the days leading up, and skip waxing or plucking for several weeks, since the follicle needs to be there for the laser to find it.
During treatment
Sessions run from a few minutes for small areas to around an hour for large zones. Most patients describe the sensation as a quick warm snap, and built-in cooling makes it considerably more tolerable than waxing.
Afterward
Some redness or mild swelling around the follicles is normal and usually settles within a day. Avoid direct sun, hot showers, and exfoliating products for a short window. Otherwise you can return to your routine right away.
Results over the series
Treated hair often sheds within one to three weeks of your first session, and regrowth comes in slower and sparser before the next appointment. Reduction builds steadily across the series rather than arriving all at once, and the clearest difference shows up once you have finished the full course.
How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Most patients need six to eight sessions to reach their goal, spaced about four weeks apart for facial areas and six weeks apart for the body. The exact number depends on the area, your hair color and thickness, and how your follicles respond.
Spacing matters more than people expect. Treatments are timed to the hair growth cycle so each session catches follicles in an active phase. Coming in too early wastes a session, and your provider will schedule accordingly.
After your initial series, most patients come in for occasional maintenance to address any regrowth. That is typically once or twice a year rather than another full series.
Am I a Candidate for Laser Hair Reduction?
The treatment works by targeting pigment in the hair, so hair color matters more than skin color. Dark, coarse hair responds best because it holds the most pigment for the laser to find.
You are likely a good candidate if you:

- Are tired of shaving, waxing, or dealing with ingrown hairs
- Want lasting reduction rather than a temporary fix

When laser treatment will not work well
Gray, white, and very light blonde hair does not respond, because there is not enough pigment for the laser to target. Red hair responds poorly for the same reason. No laser gets around this, and any practice telling you otherwise is selling you something that will not work.
Treatment is also not appropriate over active infections, broken skin, or a fresh tan, and patients who are pregnant should wait.
About skin tone
Older lasers struggled with deeper skin tones because they had trouble distinguishing hair pigment from skin pigment, which raised the risk of burns and discoloration. Diode technology and proper settings have largely solved that. All skin tones can be treated safely here, and the provider’s judgment about settings is what makes that true.

Is laser hair removal permanent?
The accurate term is permanent hair reduction. A completed series disables most of the treated follicles and the reduction lasts, but it is not the same as permanent removal. Hormonal changes and aging can activate follicles that were previously dormant, so most patients need occasional maintenance sessions to keep their result. Anyone promising permanent removal is overstating what the technology does.
Why is it called reduction instead of removal?
Because that is what the treatment actually delivers. Most follicles treated during an active growth phase are disabled permanently, but not every follicle is active at once, and new ones can become active over time. Reduction describes a lasting, significant decrease in hair, which is a real result. Removal implies every hair is gone forever, which no laser achieves.
