Spider veins and small varicose veins are a common concern that can make you feel less confident wearing shorts, dresses, or swimsuits. They are also rarely something you caused. Genetics, age, hormonal changes, pregnancy, and years of standing all play a part in who gets them.
The good news is that they are very treatable, and you have two solid options rather than one.
Two Ways We Treat Veins
We offer both laser vein therapy and sclerotherapy, which matters because they are good at different things. During your consultation your provider will determine which treatment, or which combination, fits your veins.
Laser Vein Treatment
Laser vein treatment uses targeted light energy to heat and collapse visible blood vessels without needles or incisions. The treated veins are naturally absorbed by your body over the following weeks.

Sclerotherapy is considered the gold standard for treating most spider veins and many small varicose veins on the legs. A specialized solution is injected directly into the affected vein, which causes it to collapse and gradually fade as your body absorbs it.

Which Treatment Is Right for Me?
Your provider makes this call after looking at your veins, but here is the general logic.
Laser tends to be the better fit if your veins are on the face, or they are very small spider veins, or you only have a few visible veins, or you would prefer to avoid injections entirely.
Sclerotherapy tends to be the better fit if most of your veins are on the legs, they are blue or purple rather than fine red lines, you have larger clusters, or you have several areas you want treated.
Plenty of patients end up with a combination, using sclerotherapy for the legs and laser for facial vessels, or laser to clean up fine vessels after sclerotherapy has handled the larger ones.
What to Expect
Consultation
Your provider examines the size, depth, colour, and location of your veins, reviews your health history, and recommends a treatment plan with a realistic number of sessions.
Treatment
Most treatments take 30 to 60 minutes depending on how many veins are being treated and how large the area is.
Right after
Patients are encouraged to walk immediately after treatment and can usually return to normal daily activities the same day. You may have mild redness or swelling. With sclerotherapy, compression stockings may be recommended for several days.
Aftercare
Avoid heavy exercise for a couple of days and stay out of hot baths and hot tubs for about a week. Your provider will give you specific instructions based on which treatment you had.
Results
Over the next several weeks, treated veins gradually fade as your body clears them. Some patients see change quickly, others watch it develop over a month or more.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Many patients see significant improvement after one treatment, but most need two to four sessions for the best clearance, particularly when treating multiple areas or veins that have been there a long time.
One thing worth knowing upfront: new veins can develop over time due to genetics, aging, pregnancy, or prolonged standing. That is not a treatment failure, it is how veins work. Occasional maintenance sessions in later years are common and are usually a single quick appointment rather than another full series.
Am I a Candidate for Vein Treatment?
Most patients with visible surface veins are good candidates for one treatment or the other.
You may be a good candidate if you have:
- Red, blue, or purple spider veins
- Small varicose veins
- Visible facial blood vessels
- Reticular or feeder veins on the legs
- Veins that make you self-conscious
- Healthy circulation without significant underlying venous disease
When you need something else first
That last point matters. Spider veins are sometimes the visible surface sign of a deeper venous problem. If you have significant leg swelling, aching, heaviness, skin changes around the ankles, or large bulging varicose veins, the underlying circulation needs evaluating before cosmetic treatment makes sense. Treating the surface veins without addressing what is driving them means they come back quickly.
Treatment is also not appropriate during pregnancy, and patients with a history of blood clots or deep vein thrombosis need a fuller assessment before proceeding.
Your provider will tell you directly if you need a vascular evaluation before treatment rather than treating veins that will simply return.

What is the best treatment for spider veins?
It depends on where they are, how large they are, and how deep the vessels sit. How does laser vein treatment work?

How does sclerotherapy work?

Which one hurts more?
Both are well tolerated. Laser feels like a quick snap or sting against the skin. Sclerotherapy involves a very fine needle and most patients describe a mild burning or cramping sensation that passes quickly. Neither requires numbing for most patients.
