What Are Dermal Fillers?
Dermal fillers are injectable treatments that restore volume, improve hydration, and refine contour in the face, neck, and hands. Most are made from hyaluronic acid, a substance your body already produces, which draws moisture into the surrounding tissue. Others, like Radiesse and Sculptra, work differently by stimulating your own collagen production so results build gradually and tend to last longer.
Fillers and neurotoxins solve different problems. Neurotoxin relaxes the muscles that crease your skin. Filler physically adds volume to smooth, lift, or define. Many patients get their best result from both, and your provider will tell you which combination makes sense before recommending anything.
Choosing the right filler
A skilled, experienced injector determines the appropriate dermal filler based on the treatment area, your facial anatomy, and the outcome you want. There are more than a dozen products available here for exactly that reason. You do not need to research them beforehand.

Restores the lift and fullness that fades with age, defining the mid-face and reducing the heaviness it creates in the lower face. Results typically last 12 to 18 months.
Temples
Softens the hollowing at the sides of the upper face that adds years and makes features look more angular. Frequently part of a facial balancing plan.
Under-eyes
Softens the shadow along the tear trough that reads as tired regardless of how well you slept. Usually placed with a blunt-tip cannula for precision and less bruising.
Lips
Adds volume, definition, and hydration, from subtle enhancement to fuller shaping. Lips metabolize filler faster than other areas, so expect a shorter interval between treatments.
Jawline
Adds projection and definition, reduces early jowling, and sharpens the profile. Popular with both men and women. One to two syringes can meaningfully reshape the lower face.
Chin
Improves projection and proportion. A chin that sits back can make the nose look larger and the neck less defined, so modest correction here changes the whole profile. Results typically last 12 months or longer.
Earlobes
Restores volume to lobes thinned by age or heavy earrings, so earrings sit properly again. Quick, no downtime, immediately visible.
Facial balancing
Rather than treating one concern in isolation, this approach looks at how the forehead, temples, mid-face, and lower face relate to each other and places filler where it will do the most for overall harmony. The right choice if your features feel slightly out of proportion or you want to look refreshed without looking treated.
Bio filler with PRF and PRP
Uses your own growth factors rather than synthetic product. A small amount of blood is drawn, processed in office, and re-injected to restore volume and improve skin quality. Because it comes entirely from your body, there is no risk of allergic reaction. PRF gel is thick enough to volumize while also stimulating collagen. A good option if you would rather avoid synthetic products.

What to Expect
Consultation
Your provider assesses your facial structure, discusses what is bothering you, and recommends products and placement. This is also when you will get a clear cost, since pricing depends on how many syringes your plan requires.
Comfort
Topical numbing cream is applied first, and most filler products contain lidocaine. Most patients describe the injections as pressure or a quick pinch rather than pain.
Treatment
Most appointments run 30 to 60 minutes depending on how many areas are being treated. Some areas are injected with a needle and others with a blunt-tip cannula, which your provider will choose based on the area.
Recovery
Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Swelling and some bruising are expected, particularly around the lips and under the eyes, and generally resolve in two to four days. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat for 24 to 48 hours.
Results
You will see a difference immediately, with the final result visible around 14 days once swelling settles and the product integrates. Collagen stimulators like Sculptra work differently, building over several weeks.
How Long Do Fillers Last?
Between 6 and 18 months, depending on the product and the area. Lips metabolize filler faster than cheeks or temples. Collagen stimulators like Sculptra and Radiesse last longer because they prompt your body to build its own tissue rather than simply adding volume.
Most patients maintain their results with periodic touch-ups rather than starting over each time, which usually requires less product than the initial treatment.
Am I a Candidate for Dermal Fillers?
Most healthy adults bothered by volume loss or wanting more definition are good candidates.
You may be a good candidate if you:

When filler is not the right treatment
Filler adds volume. It does not lift tissue that has descended, and using it to chase a lift is how faces end up looking overfilled. If descent is the issue, threads or skin tightening are the honest answer. If your concern is expression lines from muscle movement, that is neurotoxin. If it is texture, tone, or sun damage, that is resurfacing.
Filler is also not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with certain autoimmune conditions, over an active skin infection, or with a known allergy to any component of the product.
Your provider will tell you when a different treatment would serve you better, and when the right answer is less product rather than more.

What is the difference between fillers and Botox?
