What Is Radiesse?
Radiesse is an FDA-approved injectable made from calcium hydroxylapatite microspheres suspended in a smooth gel. Calcium hydroxylapatite occurs naturally in human bone, which makes Radiesse highly biocompatible and means no allergy testing is required.
When injected, the gel adds immediate volume and structure. The microspheres act as a scaffold that signals your body to build new collagen around them, and over the following two to three months that scaffold is gradually replaced by your own tissue.
That is what separates Radiesse from a standard hyaluronic acid filler. Most fillers occupy space until your body metabolizes them. Radiesse improves the underlying firmness and quality of the skin as well as filling.
Two Ways Radiesse Is Used
This is the part most patients do not know, and it matters because the two approaches treat entirely different concerns.
Full strength, for volume and structure
Used at full strength, Radiesse is firm. It provides real projection and lift, which makes it the right choice when you need structure: a defined jawline, a projected chin, lifted cheeks. Results are visible the same day.
Think of this version as building architecture.
Hyperdilute, for skin quality
Diluted with sterile saline and lidocaine and spread thinly across a broad area, Radiesse stops working as a volumizer entirely. Instead it becomes a collagen-stimulating treatment that improves texture, firmness, and crepiness across a whole region.
There is no filling happening here. You will not see an immediate change beyond mild swelling. What you get instead is skin that becomes progressively thicker, firmer, and smoother over three to six months as new collagen develops.
Think of this version as improving the material rather than the structure.
Which one you need depends on your concern. Hollow cheeks and a soft jawline call for full strength. Crepey skin on the neck, chest, or arms calls for hyperdilute. Some patients get both in the same plan, in different areas.

Neck and décolleté
Hyperdilute Radiesse improves crepiness, horizontal neck lines, and skin firmness. This is one of the most common uses for the hyperdilute approach and a core part of our neck rejuvenation plans.
Arms and knees
Crepey skin above the knees and on the upper arms responds well to hyperdilute Radiesse. These are areas where thin, textured skin bothers patients and where surgical options are unappealing.
Buttock enhancement
Hyperdilute Radiesse can improve skin quality, firmness, and mild contour in the buttocks without surgery. It is a skin quality treatment more than a volumizing one at this scale, so expect subtle improvement in texture and tone rather than a size change. Multiple sessions and significant product are required.
Radiesse Compared to Sculptra
Both build collagen rather than simply filling, so patients ask about this often. The difference comes down to timing and what kind of correction you need.
Radiesse gives you immediate volume, then builds collagen on top of it. You leave your appointment already looking different.
Sculptra works almost entirely through gradual collagen stimulation across multiple sessions. No immediate volumizing effect, with results building over weeks to months.
In practice, Radiesse fits better when you want instant structure in a defined area like the jawline, chin, or cheeks. Sculptra suits restoring widespread, subtle volume across the whole face over time.
Neither is reversible the way hyaluronic acid filler is, so the product choice matters more than usual. Your provider will explain both and recommend based on your goals.
What to Expect
Consultation
Your provider assesses your face or treatment area, discusses your concern, and determines whether full strength or hyperdilute Radiesse is appropriate, along with how much product your plan requires.
Comfort
Radiesse is available premixed with lidocaine, and topical numbing can be applied beforehand. Most patients describe injections as mild pressure or a pinch.
Treatment
Your provider selects placement technique and depth based on the area being treated and your anatomy. Hyperdilute treatments generally cover more area and take longer than targeted volumizing.
Recovery
Most patients return to normal activities the same day. Some swelling or bruising is expected and generally resolves within two to four days. Avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and excessive heat for 24 to 48 hours.
Results
Full strength Radiesse shows immediately, then improves as collagen develops. Hyperdilute treatment is different, with the real change appearing gradually from about six weeks and continuing for three to six months.
How Long Does Radiesse Last?
Results typically last a year or more, and in some areas such as the smile lines they can run closer to two years. Because Radiesse stimulates your own collagen, improvements in skin firmness and texture often persist even as the product itself is metabolized.
Hyperdilute treatments are usually performed as a series, with most patients completing two to three sessions spaced several weeks apart, then maintaining every 12 to 18 months.
Am I a Candidate for Radiesse?
Radiesse suits patients who want structure and definition, or who want to improve skin quality on the face or body, and who are comfortable with a product that is not reversible.
You may be a good candidate if you:

When Radiesse is not the right choice
Radiesse is firm, which makes it excellent for structure and wrong for delicate work. It is not used in the lips or in the tear trough, where hyaluronic acid filler is the correct and safer product.
It also cannot be dissolved. Unlike hyaluronic acid filler, there is no enzyme that reverses it, so the plan needs to be right the first time. If you are new to injectables and want the reassurance of reversibility, your provider may recommend starting with a hyaluronic acid product.
Radiesse is not appropriate during pregnancy or breastfeeding, with a known allergy to any component, or over an active skin infection.
How Much Does Radiesse Cost?
Radiesse is priced per syringe, so cost depends on how many syringes your treatment requires. Structural areas like the cheeks or jawline typically need one to two. Hyperdilute treatments across the neck, arms, or buttocks cover much more surface area and require more product, so those plans cost more and usually involve a series.
